Spectrum Analysis

Upload a stellar spectrum image captured with the objective-prism spectrograph. The system automatically runs the processing pipeline (rotation correction → central-line extraction → auto-positioning → wavelength mapping → template matching) and outputs the star’s spectral type, temperature, spectral lines and more.

Step 0 (optional) · Video → averaged image

What this step does

Stacks every frame of a raw capture video by averaging them pixel-by-pixel (the same operation as avi-tif.py), which greatly improves the signal-to-noise ratio. The result is a single averaged image you can then feed into the analysis pipeline below.

This step is independent and optional — if you already have a stacked image (e.g. a photo or a PNG produced earlier), skip this and upload it directly below.

Note: the browser can only decode standard web video (MP4 / WebM / MOV). Many camera AVI files (MJPEG / uncompressed) cannot be decoded here, and browser processing handles one video at a time. To batch-process a whole folder of AVI files, download and run avi-tif.py locally, then upload the resulting PNG(s).

Before you upload
  • 1.This system’s wavelength calibration, dispersion model and instrument response are all calibrated for this project’s dedicated objective-prism spectrograph (15° K9 prism + 735 mm focal-length telescope + QHYCCD camera; see “Core hardware setup” on the home page for full specs). Please upload only spectra captured with this device; images from other equipment have different dispersion and response characteristics and may give inaccurate results.
  • 2.If two or more bright stars appear in the frame, they produce multiple overlapping spectra that interfere with recognition. Please crop the image before uploading so that only the spectral strip of the single target star remains.
  • 3.Classification of low-temperature stars (cool K/M types) may carry a larger margin of error, because their distinguishing information lies mostly in the blue end where this device has limited sensitivity.
  • 4.Have a raw capture video instead of a stacked image? Use the optional “Step 0 · Video → averaged image” above to frame-average it first. For batch-processing a folder of AVI files, run the downloadable avi-tif.py script locally and upload the resulting PNG here.
